08 Aug Can You Share a Saved Audience on Meta? (No — Here’s Why
“It says I can’t share this audience” is a message I hear often, usually with some frustration behind it. The good news: it’s not a bug, and it’s not audiences in general that are restricted — it’s one specific type.
There are three audience types, and only two are shareable
Meta ads has three distinct audience types, and they behave differently when it comes to sharing:
- Custom Audiences — built from people you already own (website visitors, customer lists, engagement, and so on). Shareable.
- Lookalike Audiences — built from a Custom Audience source. Shareable.
- Saved Audiences — a bundle of manual targeting settings (location, age, gender, interests) saved for reuse. Not shareable.
If you’re seeing a message that sharing isn’t available, check which type of audience you’re looking at first. It’s almost always a Saved Audience — the share option simply doesn’t exist for that type, not because of a permissions issue or a setting you’re missing.
Why Saved Audiences work differently
A Saved Audience isn’t actual audience data the way a Custom or Lookalike Audience is — it’s just a saved combination of targeting criteria you’ve selected manually. There’s no underlying pool of specific people attached to it the way there is with a Custom Audience built from your pixel or customer list. Meta simply doesn’t offer sharing for that type of object.
How to actually share a Custom or Lookalike Audience
In Business Manager, open the grid menu (the nine-dot icon), go to Audiences, select the Custom or Lookalike Audience you want to share, and use the Share button to choose which ad account within your Business Manager to share it with. If you click on an audience and the Share option isn’t available or clickable, that’s your confirmation it’s a Saved Audience rather than a Custom or Lookalike one.
Why this matters if you manage multiple ad accounts
If you’re running ads across several ad accounts — different business units, different brands under one Business Manager — and want consistent audiences across them, build and share Custom or Lookalike Audiences rather than relying on Saved Audiences. A Saved Audience has to be manually rebuilt from scratch in every ad account where you want to use it, since there’s no sharing mechanism to carry it over.
A quick self-check
- Am I trying to share a Saved Audience, when only Custom and Lookalike Audiences support sharing?
- Do I actually need audience data shared across accounts (Custom/Lookalike), or just consistent targeting settings (Saved), which I’ll need to rebuild manually in each account?
- Am I navigating to Audiences through Business Manager, where the Share button actually lives?

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I share my audience to another ad account? It’s almost always because the audience in question is a Saved Audience, not a Custom or Lookalike Audience. Saved Audiences are a bundle of manual targeting settings — location, age, gender, interests — saved for reuse, and Meta doesn’t offer a share option for that type at all. The share button simply isn’t available on it.
Can I share Custom Audiences between ad accounts? Yes. Custom Audiences can be shared to any ad account within the same Business Manager using the Share button in the Audiences panel.
Can I share Lookalike Audiences between ad accounts? Yes, the same way as Custom Audiences — select it in the Audiences panel and use the Share button to share it to another ad account within your Business Manager.
How do I actually share an audience in Business Manager? In Business Manager, open the grid menu, go to Audiences, select the Custom or Lookalike Audience you want to share, and use the Share button to choose which ad account to share it with. If the Share option isn’t clickable, that’s your signal it’s a Saved Audience, not a Custom or Lookalike one.
